The White House welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday in what will be her final D.C. visit as Chancellor. Merkel has announced that she will be leaving the Chancellor after September’s German Bundstag elections. The purpose of Merkels visit, as she stated was to firm up the “framework conditions” of democracy.

Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union continues to lead in polls on the September Bundestag elections, though the German Green Party under the leadership of Annalena Baerbock is showing some surprising strength in second.

The German Bundestag elections are set to be held on September 26th.

The Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, yesterday, called anti-vax misinformation an “urgent threat to public health.” The present surge of the new Delta Variant is primarily in states that voted for Donald Trump and among the unvaccinated. Polls continue to show high vaccine hesitancy among Republicans and Trump supporters, rather ironically, given that vaccine was successfully manufactured and approved under the Trump Administration.

The Vaccines are safe and effective and they save lives.

Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan Has Removed Democrat State Representative Joe Moody From his Position as Speaker Pro Tem.

Actions have consequences, and El Paso Democrat Joe Moody has just learned that as he has been stripped of his position as Speaker Pro Tem of the Texas State House of Representatives by Republican Speaker Dade Phelan of Beaumont. This is the first fallout from the decision of several Texas Democratic legislators to break quorum and fly to D.C. over the issue of election reform and voting rights.

Speaker Phelan announced Moody’s removal in a memo this morning, before the House was to return. No statement has been issued, but Phelan did say that the removal was effective immediately.

Governor Greg Abbott has also said that he would authorize authorities to arrest the lawmakers that broke quorum and fled the state upon their return to Texas, than have them cabined at the Capitol until they get the job done.

I’m not sure what authority the state has in this regard under the Texas law and the State Constitution, but it’s a serious threat nonetheless.

Democratic State Rep. Chris Turner, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus has issued a statement condemning the Speakers actions in stripping Representative Moody of is position.

Several new books chronicling the former President’s last days in office have or are set to be released in the coming weeks. One book in particular, Wall Street Journal Reporter Michael C. Bender’s “Frankly, We Did Win This Election:The Inside Story of How Trump Lost”, was released yesterday, and is one that I want to read.

From excerpts of these works, a theme is emerging of an increasingly erratic, unstable, delusional, and even paranoid President, especially in the weeks and following his loss to Joe Biden in the November 2020 Presidential election. Several accounts of revealing converstions involving former President Trump, with former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, this one, in which, Trump reportedly told Kelly, tht Hitler did some good, in terms of the German economy in the 1930’s.

Another account in Benders book shows the President, calling the then presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden a “mental retard.”

Accounts of fears about a possible coup were also reportedly expressed by top military officials, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, who heroically and nobly to stood his ground against any possible assault on the Constitution and our democracy.

With all this, what is being reported in these books, is that the institutions of our democracy, the constitution, and our system of checks and balances, though shaken to their foundations, worked and remain strong.

Senate Democrats have announced a stand-alone $3.5T Budget Resolution plan that is paid for, which helped to get Joe Manchin on board with it. Bernie Sanders, who wanted a $6T budget plan, has also signed on to this plan. President Joe Biden will be visiting lawmakers on Capitol Hill to drum up support for the Democrat plan, which can be passed through the budget reconciliation process.

Included in this budget plan would be the increases in funding for Medicaid and Home and Community Based Services that was dropped from the infrastructure compromise package last month.

The question remains, will Progressives in the House go along with this proposal.

The President is scheduled to make a major speech later on today on the need to pass major voting rights legislation. This is coming as the For the People Act has stalled in the Senate and several Texas Democrats have broken quorum by leaving the state and flying to Washington D.C., and, in effect, again blocking a “election integrity” or “voter suppression” bill from being passed in a Special Session of the 87th legislature, where they plan to lobby congress on behalf of a voting rights bill.

There is one major difference between the legislation that Democrats in Washington D.C. are attempting to pass and the bills that are being proposed and passed by several Republican State Legislatures across the country. The For the People Act is designed to make it easier for people to vote, while the Republican bills, in these various state legislatures, are intended to make it harder for people to vote.

Yesterday, the President addressed the nation from the Rose Garden in observance of the Fourth of July, Independence Day. The President reflected on the past year, the pandemic, the corresponding lockdowns and event cancellations. Including last years fourth of July celebrations.

Even with missing the President’s goal of having 70% of Americans vaccinated, we now in a much different and much better position than we were a year ago. Though we haven’t reached the 70% mark yet, 67% of Americans have received at least one dose of the vaccines.
