Joe Biden is running into massive roadblocks, as his ambitious, liberal policy agenda has gotten bogged down on Capital Hill. This past weekend, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia said that he will oppose the so-called “For the People Act.” The sweeping Voting Rights Reform bill proposed by Congressional Democrats and championed by the President. Opponents of the bill, though, say that it would give the Democrats an unfair partisan advantage in elections.
With the Senate in a 50-50 split, Manchin’s defection here would almost certainly mean defeat for the voting reform bill, since Senate Republicans are likely to be united in opposition to the bill.
Biden’s infrastructure bill, the American Jobs Plan, has also encountered stiff opposition from Republicans. Opponents of the plan cite the $1.9T pricetag, along with the proposed tax increases and the amount of proposed spending on projects not traditionally defined as infrastructure.
